09/13/02 Internet News The lawsuit between Nicole Bass and WWE went to court yesterday to determine what evidence can be presented to a jury when the case goes to trial. Bass is arguing sexual harassment on the part of WWE due to the following incidents: - The Brooklyn Brawler "sexually assaulted" her on a WWE flight to Great Britain.
- On an episode of RAW, HBK called her a "he" and made crude gestures.
- Bass was injured with an actual guitar (not a prop) during a segment on WWE TV.
- Nicole Bass claims to have received "unwanted sexual advances" while in the women's locker room.
WWE's strategy was weakened, however, as they will not be permitted to take a few things to trial. One of which is a collection of tapes from The Howard Stern show in which there is an ongoing issue, where her gender is debated. [Ben Johnson]
09/20/02 Internet News By KATI CORNELL SMITH September 18, 2002 The world's largest female wrestler traded her characteristic muscle shirt and short shorts for a dark suit and striped blouse at round one in a courtroom face-off against her former promoters yesterday. The hulking Nicole Bass - a frizzy blonde who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 230 pounds - suffered relentless backstage sexual harassment during her five months working as a "superstar" wrestler for WWE, her lawyer Kathleen Tomlinson said in opening statements yesterday.
But attorneys for World Wrestling Entertainment say Bass was a lousy wrestler, and is sore over being canned. Defense lawyer Jerry McDevitt told the Brooklyn federal jury Bass knew only one move - the "choke slam." "You have to be good. You're competing against the best of the best," McDevitt said as the massive wrestler listened quietly. "Ms. Bass wasn't good enough and that's what this lawsuit is about."
Tomlinson argued that more than a decade of training as a body builder earned the 38-year-old muscle-bound woman her dream job with the WWE - though her "hopes were dashed very quickly."
Bass could accept the entertainment value of on-screen sexual innuendo, but expected the antics to end once she left the set. The wrestler claims her male counterparts made unscripted sexual advances and regularly paraded in and out of the women's locker rooms.
In one incident in May 1999, Steven Lombardi - a supervisor also named in the suit - allegedly assaulted her in an airplane on the way to England by pushing her against a wall, grabbing her breasts, and grinding his groin into her body.
Bass says she feared for her life if she complained.
Lombardi's lawyer, Laura Brevetti, told the jury yesterday no one on the plane saw "the commotion" Bass described as taking place in plain view of other passengers.
By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer Sept. 19, 2002 NEW YORK (AP) - Wrestling impresario Vince McMahon provided a verbal smackdown Thursday to a female bodybuilder who claimed in a lawsuit that she was sexually harassed while wrestling for his company. "You're just trying to throw dirt against the wall, trying to make something stick," said McMahon, chairman of the board for World Wrestling Entertainment. McMahon later called the lawsuit "a smear" against his company. McMahon was questioned for more than two hours by the attorney for 6-foot-2, 230-pound Nicole Bass, a plaintiff who can bench press 315 pounds. Bass, 38, alleged she was subjected to numerous sexual "indignities" while working for the WWE in 1999. Her suit claimed that a male wrestler "graphically simulated a sexual act" behind her back; that male WWE employees accosted female wrestlers in locker rooms; and that she was sexually assaulted on an airplane by a WWE executive. McMahon, 57, denied knowledge of any sexual harassment of Bass. He said the WWE had hoped to turn the bodybuilder into a star, but fired her after five months because she had "two left feet." "She just didn't have the coordination to develop her skills," McMahon testified. "In our business, she was not a world-class athlete."
10/04/02 Internet News The New York Post and New York Daily News covered Triple H's testimony yesterday at Nicole Bass's sexual harassment case against WWE. Bass is accusing Triple H of barging into the women's locker room on numerous occasions. Triple H denied Alicia Webb's (a/k/a Ryan Shamrock) claim that he once surprised her while she was going to the bathroom. "To me, it would be disrespectful to women," Triple H said during testimony. "I would knock on the door and ask for Chyna to come out... or I would ask if everyone was decent." "I feel... that she's trying to make a buck," Triple H said. "I don't take it personally. She picked a visible name... She had the look, the size. She didn't have the rest of it. It's a tough business." Triple H also accused Bass of ruining the one match they performed together in. [Jason Powell, pwtorch.com] ----- Jim Ross stated in his newest report on WWE.com "I was a witness in the Nicole Bass trial in Brooklyn Federal Court Thursday and was on the witness stand for over two hours. This trial has gone on, seemingly, forever and will hopefully be concluded next week." [The Ross Report]
10/11/02 Internet News The jury foreman of Nicole Bass's sexual harassment lawsuit against WWE spoke out against Bass after the jury ruled in WWE's favor Tuesday. "I think this kind of stuff belittles all those valid arguments by women," Pete Sutich told the New York Post outside the federal courthouse in New York. "Her and many of her witnesses, we felt were not telling the truth."
WWE defense lawyer Jerry McDevitt also took a shot at Bass, going so far as to accuse her of attempting to blackmail the company: "I think Nicole Bass miscalculated. I think she thought the WWE would buckle under. We don't pay blackmail and we won't ever."
Despite the jury's ruling, Bass referred to the verdict as a "personal victory," and claimed to have lost 16 lbs. during the trial. "I stood up for women," Bass said. "I stood up to a huge corporation. I stuck to my guns. It was very much an ordeal for me, to have to go through this process."
McDevitt responded to Bass's comments by saying, "Nicole's trying to put lipstick on a corpse. That's all she's doing."
Linda McMahon said she now regrets hiring Bass. "I regret the lawsuit, and it never would have happened if we hadn't hired her," McMahon said. Steve Lombardi, whom Bass accused of sexually assaulting her on an airplane said he wasn't bothered by her accusations. "I don't feel tarnished at all. Look who made the allegations. 10/18/02 Internet News Nicole Bass, who recently lost her case against World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., called into the Howard Stern Radio Show, and had some interesting things to say in her defense. Bass told Stern that although she lost the case, she felt like a winner due to the fact that hardly anyone stands up to Vince McMahon, and she did. Howard mentioned that he had told her that she had no case against McMahon's company, and warned her not to persue it in court. Nicole mentioned that she brought the case against WWE to court because she felt that her privacy was being infringeed upon, claiming male wrestlers and employees were walking freely in and out of the female dressing rooms without notice. Howard then asked Nicole about her claim that she was molested by WWE agent Steve Lombardi, which was proven untrue in the case. Bass stated that the incident did happen, and she had a witness to the event, but out of fear of losing his job, the witness decided not to say anything or back up her claims of harrassment. Howard said that the jury thought she was after money and she agreed. Nicole said she's not going to talk about it (the case) anymore but she is not going to back down to anyone anymore. Pete, the foreman of the jury in the case, called into the show and said he felt bad for everything Nicole had to go through during the trial. Pete said Nicole had horrible witnesses and Nicole agreed. She said she couldn’t go back and change the past. The topic then shifted to Nicole's upcoming fight with Joey Buttafuoco for The Howard Stern Show. For those who remember, Buttafuoco was challenged by former WWE star Joanie "Chyna" Laurer, and he won the decision by very controversial means, making Chyna look very foolish since her wrestling personna was someone who could kick any man's ass. 11/29/02 Internet News Nicole Bass Article in TV Guide: You know, it really doesn’t matter how good the X-Division is, or the stuff between Angle & Benoit or any of the other cool stuff in wrestling, the average Joe Public is going to open up their TV Guide, see that ridiculous photo and think, "Man, those wrestling fans are complete retards." The article covers a little of the recent lawsuit against WWE which has one of the most laughable lines ever. Bass thinks if she was "small and cute instead of big and cute" she might have been taken more seriously. Excuse me?! Big and cute? Earth to Nicole, you are one of the 5 ugliest women in the history of mankind. I swear to god the second photo of Nicole "boxing" looked so much like Shawn Michaels I had to do a double take. 12/03/04 Internet News Howard played the much anticipated Nicole Bass sex phone call bit today. On her website, Nicole offers people the chance to have a 10 minutes fantasy phone call with her for $30. Jesse, one of our interns called her up and we recorded the ensuing wackiness. The first strange thing was Nicole's husband answering the phone and then it took her a little while to "remember" that she had scheduled the call with someone in the first place. Jesse set up the role playing by telling Nicole that he was changing in a locker room at school and Nicole, his coach, walks in and sees him naked. Nicole is supposed to get mad at him and yell at him and then spank him. Right in the middle of the conversation Jesse starts talking to Nicole as if she’s a guy, calling her “Sir” and asking HER to whip IT out. Nicole didn’t miss a beat and commanded the intern to grab her package. She then said she was banging her “tea bags” in his face. She called Jesse a little bitch and told him all about her huge and “gnarly” hands that she was smacking his ass with. Then, right when Jesse seemed to be getting to "the point", Nicole said "time's up" and hung up the phone. Gary thought that the word “gnarly” should never be part of a sex phone call. Nicole later called in to say she knew it was someone from the show the whole time and that she was just playing along. Yeah Right... [HowardStern.com]
