In 3 incredible years Sable (Rena Mero) went from a valet for her husband Mark Mero to superstardom and eventually left the WWF in a bitter lawsuit. She won two 1997 Slammy Awards, one for "Dressed To Kill" and the other for "Miss Slammy". Her daring bathing suit (you could barely call it that) definitely had much to do with her winning the "Miss Slammy" award. Not accepting her role as an arm piece for Mark, she developed into a fairly decent wrestler herself, more than once kicking his butt, along with participating in one of the best long running feuds between herself, Luna and Jackie. Her feud with Jackie led to two memorable PPV's - the July 1998 Fully Loaded PPV Bikini Contest, followed the next month by the Summer Slam PPV intergender match with the debuting Edge as her partner battling Mark Mero and Jacqueline. Finally in November of 1998 Sable achieved the crowning glory and became the WWF Women's Champion after beating Jackie for the newly reinstated title.
Several months later Playboy was going to issue a 'special edition' magazine featuring only Sable with the Sable name on the cover at which point the WWF filed a law suit against Playboy. In October of 1999 the magazine was released using Rena Mero's name instead. Since her 'retirement' from professional wrestling, the year 2000 nor 2001 brought any real success her way. During that time Rena has been featured in a comic book, released her autobiography 'Undefeated' with no real success, and has had plenty of rumors that she would be returning to the WWF again. The sultry Diva made her controversial comeback to the WWE on April 3, 2003 during Torrie Wilson's "Playboy Coming Out Party" on SmackDown! This led to several confrontations between the two hot Diva's, not in wrestling matches, but to the fans pleasure they met in several bikini contests. Torrie won each one easily and Sable finally tired of continually losing to the younger fan favorite and selected a new target to aggravate. On June 5, 2003 during SmackDown! Vince McMahon announced that he had just made Sable Stephanie's assistant. An enraged Stephanie did not do well adjusting to the situation, especially with Sable going out of way to irritate the bosses daughter at every opportunity. Sable did her best to insure that Steph suffered in every way possible which included a great food fight, and Sable manipulating that Stephanie get "creamed" during a match between the two at the Vengeance PPV by A-Train. All this feuding led to Vince declaring a father/daughter "I Quit Match" which was held at the No Mercy PPV in October 2003. Vince won the match by choking Stephanie into unconsciousness, although she never did say "I quit". At the end of 2003 Sable announced that she was getting divorced from Mark Mero, although she did not go into the specifics of their breakup, while not doing much to further her WWE career other than staying as Vince's "arm charm". To start off 2004 it was announced that Sable and her Playboy nemesis Torrie Wilson were going to be featured in another Playboy spread as a Diva Tag Team. This should produce some interesting feuding between the two! |
