Champion Mickie JamesThe Championship History

Current Champion 04/14/08 To Present - Mickie James

After an almost three year hiatus on the WWF Women's Championship Belt last held by Alundra Blaze (Madusa), Vince McMahon and the WWF decided once again to bring the title belt out of retirement.

1998
The belt was re-instated on 9/21/98 with a match between Jacqueline and Sable. Jacqueline won and held onto the title for 2 months, before losing it to Sable on 11/15/98.

1999
Sable went on to hold the belt for 6 months until 5/10/99, losing the belt to Debra, about one month before the ex-champ left the WWF and filed her lawsuit. Debra held the title for only one month, until 6/14/99 before Ivory became the newest title holder, keeping the belt for 6 straight months, except for 1 week that Moolah held it.

2000
On 12/12/99 the Kat started her short reign as the champion, but that quickly ended on 1/31/00 in a Lumber Jill Snow Bunny Match that had Harvey Whippleman posing as a contestant named Hervina. Hervina won the match, but was immediately exposed as a man.

Claiming that there wasn't a woman in the Federation that could beat him, Harvey Whippleman put his WWF Federation Women's Championship on the line against Jacqueline on 2/3/00.

Jackie kept the title for another 6 weeks until 3/30/00, facing off against Stephanie McMahon who had enlisted the aid of D-Generation X and Tori. Needless to say an outnumbered Jacqueline lost the title and a storm of controversy began as the bosses daughter maintained the gold while making only 2  title defenses in 5 months.  Finally Ms. McMahon-Helmsley lost the belt to the newcomer Lita on 8/21/00, thanks to The Rock's help as special referee.

Lita's title reign was a short-lived 3 months, but she put the title up probably more than any other champion had in a 3 month period (7 times). Ivory snatched the title back once again on 11/2/00 when Lita faced off against Ivory, Jacqueline and Trish Stratus in a Four Corner's Match. Lita seemed to have the match won after a moonsault on Ivory, but Edge & Christian attacked her when the referee wasn't looking. Ivory managed to hold the championship for 5 months, but not without getting help from her partners in The Right To Censor.

2001
On April 1st, 2001Chyna made her second Championship title attempt (the first being The Royal Rumble)  against Ivory.  This time being in better condition and not suffering from her neck injury, Chyna demolished Ivory within 4 minutes to gain the coveted Women's Title. It's doubtful that the Chyna will have a short reign since she is definitely the dominant female in the WWF!

After the May 20, 2001 match between Chyna and Lita, Chyna retained the title, but became embroiled in contract negotiations that the WWF could not or would not come to terms with.  Once again the WWF made a female "superstar", only to find out that they wanted to be paid more when it was time to renew the old contract. Imagine that! As such, Chyna disappeared from the scene, and the new title holder would be decided in a female Six Pack Challenge on Nov. 18th, just a few days before Chyna's contract expired on November 30th.

The 2001 Survivor Series PPV Six Pack Challenge in November featured Trish Stratus, Lita, Jacqueline, Ivory, Mighty Molly and former ECW newcomer Jazz. Although it was an entertaining and tough fought match, once again the WWF opted for beauty over expertise, which gave Trish Stratus the win.  We did predict that Trish would win over the much more formidable competitor - Jacqueline.

For the next few months the newcomer - Jazz - decided it was time to make the delicious Trish's life a living hell.  Attacking mainly from behind, Jazz started a deadly campaign going into 2002 that made it clear in no uncertain terms that she wanted the championship belt.  Every time Trish appeared in the ring or put the belt up for grabs she had to watch her back, knowing that Jazz was just looking for a chance to blindside the champ.

2002
This was obviously an unprecedented "push" by the WWF for someone so new to the Federation.  Eventually Jazz attacked Trish backstage and managed to break the champ's hand by slamming a trunk lid on it.  Trish still managed to retain her title beating Jazz the next two times they met, but the third time was finally the charm for the powerful black Amazon. On a Monday Night Raw in February 2002 Jazz finally became the WWF Women's Champion.

For the next 3 months (02/02/02 - 05/06/02) Jazz furiously battled with Trish Stratus over the Championship Title Belt.   The only other contenders for the title during that time were Molly Holly and a WrestleMania 18 Triple Threat Match that included Lita.

Sometime during her reign Jazz developed some bothersome symptoms that turned out to be a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament ) in her left knee.  Unable to continue without having the problem operated on, the WWE came up with one of the strangest matches ever devised.  In a unique contest Trish Stratus entered the ring along with Bubba Ray Dudley in a tag match against Stevie Richards and Jazz. Although it was a tag match, the rules stated that only the women could face each other and the men could only trade blows with Hardcore match rules also applying. Both the Women's Championship and the Hardcore Championship would be on the line as well. Bubba was able to take care of Stevie while Trish dispatched Jazz to again hold the title belt.

In a period of a month (05/19/02 - 06/23/02) Trish put the title up an unprecedented 5 times before losing to Molly Holly at the King Of The Ring PPV.  Molly held the belt for the next 3 months (06/23/02 - 09/22/02) losing to Trish, who then went on a another almost weekly title defense.  From 09/23/02 - 11/17/02 Trish defended the tile 6 times finally losing to her new nemesis - Victoria - at the Survivor Series PPV.

2003
To end 2002 and start off 2003 Victoria took on Stacy Keibler (look out!) and then got down to business by taking on Jacqueline & Trish in several Triple Threat Matches, including the First Ever Women's Hardcore Triple Threat Match and the First Ever Women's Chicago Street
Fight
Title Match.

Just before going into WrestleMania XIX, Jazz returned from her knee injury to antagonize both Victoria and Trish simultaneously.  This led into one of hottest women's matches of all time - a Triple Threat Match with Victoria pitted against the able and 3-Time Women's Champion Trish Stratus and the deadly Amazon Jazz.  All three women gave as good as they got, with Jazz & Victoria even teaming up against Trish.  In the end though the blonde bombshell came through once again to win the title for her 4th time.

Within a month Trish lost the belt to Jazz, who then held the belt for only two months before losing to a totally unknown opponent.  During a Monday Night RAW Battle Royal, Jazz faced off against Trish, Ivory, Victoria, Jacqueline, Molly and a brand new rookie - Gail Kim.  Somehow with all these quality opponents, the WWE decided that after only 5 minutes in the ring (and our first look at Gail Kim) she should win the title!  What a joke.  Fortunately she held the title for only a month before Molly Holly took the championship belt for her 2nd reign.

Molly went on to hold the belt for 7 months, but it was pretty much an unremarkable period for the belt, especially since she didn't defend the title between 8/18/03 - 11/16/03 & 12/14/03 - 02/23/04.  That pretty much left her only defending the title for 3 months out of 7, not much of an accomplishment.

2004
Finally in February, Molly defended the title in a Fatal Four Way match, losing to Victoria who would be serving her 2nd stint as the Women's WWE Champion.

During the next 4 months Victoria successfully defended the title against Molly twice and Lita, then met her doom in June at the Bad Blood PPV Fatal Four Way match against Trish, Lita and Gail Kim. Just as it looked like Lita would regain the title once again, she was surprised by Trish who pinned her and became the first ever 5 time Women's Champion.

From there Trish had a dynamite year, defending her title 7 times, although it should also be marked for some controversy, and some of Trish's great deviousness.

In July, Molly, Nidia and Victoria were in the ring for a "Envelope on a Pole" match. The person to snag the envelope would have a future match with Trish for the title. Tyson Tomko and Trish Stratus made their way out to the announcer's table, with Trish sporting a wrist cast, due to a legitimate injury that was supposed to put her out of action for 4-6 weeks.

As Nidia celebrated in the ring Trish and Tyson headed towards the ring so Trish could congratulate Nidia on her win. "I would give you a hand but I can't. Do you realize what you have in your hand? The opportunity of a lifetime. A golden opportunity if you will. I mean the chance to face me!" At this point Trish entered the ring and stood in front of Nidia and continued, "I mean think about it, in the near future, you and I will be facing each other... I mean when I'm ready!" and then Trish hauled off and slugged Nidia right in the head with her cast. Trish immediately told the ref "I think I'm ready, ring the bell ref!" It had to be the fastest Women's Championship title defenses ever!!

It would be more than two months before Trish would defend the title again, which brought to mind the question of what happened to the 30 day rule!  It seems that everyone over at WWE either forgot, ignored or misplaced the fact that a title holder is supposed to defend at least once in 30 days or lose the belt!  Although she didn't compete until September , Trish was definitely up to her devilish vamp tricks.  In August a feud with Lita started developing right after  Summer Slam, when Trish decided to give Lita a Wedding Shower prior to the pregnant Diva marrying the baby's father - Kane!

Trish entered the women's locker room with the a few of WWE Divas. Trish told Lita they had a surprise for her and that they wanted to turn her frown upside down - so they decided to throw her a bridal shower. The women presented her with birth control pills and condoms and told her she didn't have to worry about the baby because this is what it would look like. Gail Kim then held up a picture of a baby with Kane's face superimposed on it. Trish said that Lita could thank them now, but Lita just looked at the Divas with a lot of anger. Trish then wished Lita good luck.

At the wedding the following week Trish's interrupted the ceremony. Dressed in an extremely sexy white negligee (she looked HOTTER than the bride) Trish told Lita that she wasn't there to stop the ceremony, but to show Lita respect. Trish thought it would be terrible that Lita didn't have a maid of honor, so who else but her? She even wore white because Lita couldn't. She went on to tell Lita that she didn't respect sex before marriage and even though Lita is marrying Kane, everything would be fine - Lita should just open her heart just like she opened her legs! Lita of course attacked Trish.

In October, after successfully defending her title against Victoria and Stacy (how hard was that), Trish walked up to Lita in the backstage area, and said she looked pretty. Trish was glad she bumped into Lita, because what a year she has had. She got back with Matt, ruined that, and married Kane. Trish asked if Lita fell for the big fellow, but it doesn't matter, because she ruined his career too. Trish said Lita has a lot of men to choose from on Raw, and said as a friend she is concerned about her pregnancy weight. Trish said Lita looked chubby, and once again Lita attacked Trish.

Finally in November the two got a chance to battle one another at the Survivor Series PPV.  Lita was a wildcat and Trish struggled to fight off the crazed Diva.  She was finally able to slam Lita head first into the announcer's table, but then Lita sent Trish face first into a chair. Lita grabbed a steel chair and hammered away at Trish and was disqualified. The following week after a match between Molly and Lita, Trish came out to the ring with a nose piece on. She asked Lita if she was happy, since it was her fault she had to wear the THING on her face... her beautiful face. She told Lita that she was going to pay, right NOW. Trish hit the ring and Lita slammed Trish right in the nose with an open palm! Lita left the ring laughing as Trish screamed and cried.

Lita was able to regain the title for her 2nd Championship on a Monday Night Raw in December.  In one of the best women's matches ever Lita grabbed Trish from behind and nailed her with a reverse Twist of Fate and then climbed the top rope and hit Trish with the moonsault for the win.  I was thinking at the time I was watching the match, that it was one of the best women's matches ever.  It might not have had all the "WOW" effect it needed but technically it was one of the tightest matches ever.  It was definitely on a par with the top men's matches.

2005
One month later, Trish and Lita had another matchup on Monday Night Raw, with Trish leaving the ring as the winner and the first ever 6-time Women's Champion. She went on to successfully defend her title in a Triple Threat Match in Febuary, and again at WrestleMania 21, followed by a rematch the next evening on Raw.

After a tag team match late in April Trish was sidelined with a herniated disk and did not compete again until early September, after making her return by saving the 2005 Diva Search winner Ashley from Torrie, Candice and Victoria. Later that month she successfully defended her title against Victoria and went on to retain her title until WrestleMania 22 in April 2006, where she lost to newcomer and nutty nemesis, Mickie James.

2006
Mickie defended her title 4 times, twice against Trish, until losing to Lita on Raw in August. After winning the title belt for her 3rd time, Lita was able to retain the belt for only a month before Trish Stratus won her 7th title at the Unforgiven PPV. Trish had already announced that the match would be her last and that she would retire. Living up to her word, Trish promptly vacated the title, and a series of Elimination matches were held, allowing several women to battle against one another to decide the final two women that would meet at the Cyber Sunday PPV.

Mickie James and Lita faced off against one another with Lita winning the match for her 4th title reign. Within weeks she announced her retirement match also, which was decided at the Survivor Series. Unfortunately for Lita her retirement match was not as successful as Trish's, and she lost to Mickie James who won the title belt for the 2nd time.

2007
Mickie James went into 2007 feuding with her only legitimate competition - Victoria. In January she defended her title at  the New Year's Revolution PPV and a Monday Night Raw.

In February a feud started between Mickie and Melina which produced a title shot during a Monday Raw, which Melina was able to win and clinch her first title.

Melina held on to the title for several months, defending her title 2 times against Mickie James and once against Ashley at Wrestlemania 23 in a Lumberjill Match, before running into Candice Michelle, an unlikely match-up, at the WWE Vengeance PPV. Candice had been looking really sharp in her last few matches and was able to take the superior Melina, who apparently underestimated her statuesque opponent.

Candice was only able to hold the title for two matches. The 1st at the Great American Bash PPV and the 2nd at the Unforgiven PPV before dropping the title to newcomer Beth Phoenix in October at the No Mercy PPV. Two weeks later Candice suffered a broken collarbone in a rematch the "Glamazon" during a Raw first ever Women's "Best 2 Out of 3 Falls" match.

Beth defended the title only 1 time during the rest of the year, against Mickie James at the Armageddon PPV in December.

2008
Beth maintained the title over the women in early 2008, but part of the reason she held the title for 4 months is that she wrestled in a number of non-title matches. Demoralizing the whole Diva roster while completely dominating her opponents - especially Mickie James who was unable to defeat her in several matches - Beth lost the title during her one defense since December against Mickie during a Raw in London, England.
